My TextEdit was ALWAYS saving to iCloud with a new document, regardless of the last folder saved to I changed the System Settings as Pomeroy described and for safety quit TextEdit and re-opened it I created a new trial document and the only reason it wanted to save it to iCloud was because that's the last place it was saved

Are there any free plain text editors you recommend? MacOS Textedit is quite buggy for me (and a lot other Big sur users) I only use it as plain text, and if sync between devices via iCloud works it's a big plus

BBEdit is a good and sophisticated alternative, but TextEdit has not been discontinued View attachment 2403211 Another vote for BBEdit, lots of nice features and will continue to work indefinitely in “free mode” - albeit with a reduced feature set (think Text Wrangler)
- TextEdit plain text mode will not save font size
So my m o , as always when opening TextEdit, is to immediately change the document to plain text mode -- I prefer fixed width, and I hate seeing the indent
